The Art of Harry Clarke

Harry Clarke (March 17, 1889–1931)

Most of these are his illustrations for editions of Goethe's Faust, Edgar Allen Poe, Swinburne and some Fairy Tales.

  1. I want to know what's happening in that one second from the top. I think these could be put to great use in my Changeling chronicle. The black, white and gray makes me think winter Court.

I hope you have been well. Good to see you back.

  2. That is great stuff. It looks fairly eastern European. I wonder what his unfluences were?

  4. Harry Clarke is great. I went on a minor quest while in Ireland a few years back to see his sketches and stained-glass pieces (which are incredible to see in real life). There is a series of watercolor sketches I saw in Cork that I think were mock-ups for a Poe work he was illustrating before he died. Crazy morphine-psychosis horror, really disturbing. Maybe I have some pics somewhere.

  6. @ Christian - Poe's Ligeia.

    @ Zak - Yes!

@Spawn - I would love to see his glass in person!

@ Greg - Judging from his Fairy Tale work, people were a lot more level-headed about this sort of thing, back then.

  8. @Jason - My art education is virtually non-existent, so I included the Wikipedia link to get you started. :)

  9. I wondered about that last, but I've seen it attributed multiple times to Mr. Clarke. Any further info would be appreciated.

And, IMO, not even one of the most disturbing pictures from that manga.

    Aieee.

  14. Regarding the last image, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uzumaki, or do a Google image search for "uzumaki junji ito". The picture is from a story called "The Scar" in the first volume.
The Clarke art is fantastic. Thanks for posting!

Russ Nicholson (Fighting Fantasy, White Dwarf, Fiend Folio) seems to me to have been influenced by Harry Clarke.

Where? I'd think the obvious sound effect caption would give it away...
