YDIS recently posted an expose, on the many regular commenters to his illustrious blog. This brought to mind the many emails I've received, claiming to have solved the mystery of his true identity. While most, I think, are way off base, I've decided to report the more likely, or interesting, scenarios:
1. Jeff Rients - After a three day session of Enochian Chess, Jeff had a great alchemical revelation! Putting his formula into action, he bravely gulped his mystical concoction. Alas, like unto Dr. Doom, there was a flaw in his calculations and no Mr. Fantastic to lend a helping hand. Suddenly inflicted with wracking pain, his hair and teeth lengthening, his eyes, become sunken, the warm and friendly Dr. Rients, found himself transformed into the horrible Mr. YDIS.
2. Kent - In despair at the failure of his audience, to appreciate his eloquent, ironic witticisms, Kent created YDIS in a pique of anger, as a show of disdain, towards those philistines of the OSR, who were only capable of appreciating the most low-brow, ugly sort of humor. Alas, he's now a captive of his own generosity, after witnessing the great joy and exuberant good humor, he's brought to all our lives. The show must go on!
3. James Maliszewski - The Papal Crown resting heavily, upon his head, Mr. M conceived a brilliant plan, to ferret out the many traitors, within the OSR! It is also a possibility, that the activities are actually being carried out by the Monks of St. Gaxyg and the Pope is unaware of their involvement in this unsavory campaign.
4. John Stater - The Land of Nod, Mystery Men, the new Hexcrawl line from FFG, The Tome of Horrors, Pars Fortuna, the Nod Magazine, the list goes on and on! Mr. Stater is the hardest working man in the OSR! Is it so unlikely, he could find time for one more project?
5. Zak S. - The idea of a friendly, reasonable, talented fellow, whose life is filled with meaningful work, friends and lovers, carrying out the sort of goings on as takes place at YDIS is absurd. But, that's the point! YDIS is a work of art, as well as an in-joke, part of a multi-layered experiment in Dadaism, which only those on the inside, privy to the whole, complex picture, will ever be able to fully appreciate.
6. The K&K Alehouse - It's been suggested that one or another K&K regular is the culprit. Incorrect! It's all of them!
7. The RPGpundit - The Pundit already has his hands full, what with keeping the Swine in check. And one would think the OSR more of an ally, in this regard. But, we're a Movement. Possibly a dangerous one! So, in a quandary, the Pundit created the YDIS persona, to lay the ground-work for an attack, should one become necessary! If the OSR proves itself to be another scourge upon the RPG world, the Pundit will reveal himself, take his carefully cultivated army and go forth to war!
8. Austrodavicus - Known for writing many excellent compositions, elucidating the nature of the OSR and its detractors, Austrodavicus also put another plan into action! Taking a cue from the Bush Administration and its strategery of turning Iraq into an irresistible focus for terrorists, YDIS was born, to captivate and distract the OSR's many enemies.
9. The Underdark Gazette guy - After exhausting himself keeping up with the OSR, the UG guy snapped, like Sam Kinison's Jesus and told everyone to suck it!
10. Cyclopeatron - Who set out to prove, once and for all, that Controversy attracts more comments than Content.
11. James Raggi - The real purpose of YDIS is to create more controversy and draw more attention to Mr. Raggi and the GE! The diatribes against all those other bloggers, are just a smokescreen!
12. Everybody! Yup! That's right! It's a group project of the OSR and everyone's in on it, but you!

Whoa, way to boost your page views there!
ReplyDeleteMy money's split between 7 and "some random guy who ragequit from Dragonsfoot 14 months ago."
This looks suspiciously like a clever ruse to distract us from the real YDIS guy; James Smith.
ReplyDeleteI say YDIS guy really is a girl. What about the Dungeon Mistress? Her silence in the last few months really is suspect... :D
ReplyDeleteThe Walrus is Paul.
ReplyDelete@Trey - Now you're revealing too much!
ReplyDeleteSomeone who frequents the RPGsite. I don't think it's Pundit.
ReplyDeleteHe's probably working with one or more other bloggers.
I think a lot of the 'commenters' are the author himself.
No, it's not the Pundit. An RPGsite regular wouldn't surprise me, though you would think that particular forum would satisfy anyone's appetite for invective.
ReplyDeleteThanks dude - hadn't ventured into that dark corner of the internet yet. I think I'll become the YDISIS guy.
ReplyDeleteLike Spartacus, we are all the YDIS guy.
ReplyDelete@James: You got that right!
ReplyDelete@ckutalik - That would have been a more amusing post. :)
ReplyDeleteHahahaha, great stuff!
ReplyDeleteI knew it was all of you!
ReplyDeleteWhy didn't I see? Waitaminute...
YDIS? Y.D.I.S.? !!!
D'oh!
Now I feel doubly foolish for not seeing it.
It gotta be that crazy Underdark Gazette guy, it's just gotta be!
ReplyDeleteShhh! A few people were too close to guessing the truth and I had to muddy the waters a bit.
ReplyDeleteI was really sort of shocked by YDIS at first because it seemed very inflammatory and I wondered why anyone would be so vicious within our circle (at least anonymously so, I think we usually just bear our teeth and claws and have it out enough otherwise) and then I realized that it is a roast of sorts and many of those who take the abuse are fairly good eggs about it and don't take it too seriously. Whoever it is, they do bring everyone down to earth.
ReplyDeleteDuh, it's The Happy Whisk. She needs some place to express what she's actually feeling about the RPG bloggers when she can't write yet another pleasant and encouraging comment, or block out the insanity with more cupcakes and brioches.
ReplyDelete@Spawn - Hah!
ReplyDeleteHow did I get a mention?!?!
ReplyDeleteSorry, but it's not me. I despise the site as gutless and puerile. If you're going to criticise, have the balls to put your name to it (thus sayeth me, David Macauley).
Although I must admit I like the idea of the bug-catcher site to draw the moths to the flame. That could be a stroke of genius. :-)
Hmmm, so, I'd never heard of Your Dungeon is Suck. I went and had a look. I don't think I've gained anything by doing so.
ReplyDeleteI strongly believe the YDIS "Guy" is a girl. I have not known many men to be able to articulate such fowl language in such a way. Most of us men go you know what Fuck You! and then the fists are flying. Just saying is all.
ReplyDeletePlus has anyone noticed; the posts that are the most repulsive(but delightful) and hateful are written at the same time of the month each month. The rest are good, but a little half hearted.
I confess... I am not the YDIS guy. But I hope he trashes my site 'cause I think that would increase traffic.
ReplyDeleteWhat about Christian, over at destination unknown? It's always the one you least suspect, after all.
The whole thing is just TFF. And people knocking Jeff Rients for it? C'mon... really?
ReplyDeleteHowdy ChicagoWiz - Maybe we should all support Jeff and go over to YDIS and comment. Might be therapeutic too. ;)
ReplyDeleteI rolled a 11 - Mr Raggi it is. ;)
ReplyDeleteOkay, I confess, it's me! Using both YDIS and my own amiable rpg and movie blog I create myriad distractions! Why? While everybody else is dealing with the chaos that is YDIS, I'm in the background looking for a buried treasure of gold dubloons!
ReplyDeleteAnd I would have gotten away with it if it wasn't for you meddling kids and your assorted pets!
@Mike David: you mentioned yourself, YDIS, gold dubloons, and a Scooby Doo reference.
ReplyDeleteThat might be the most perfect comment ever posted.
I'd just like to suggest the possibility that it could still be me.
ReplyDelete[whistles]
No . . wait. Nope. Not me. I was worried there for a minute. Thought I wasn't on a blogging vacation after all.
ReplyDeleteHowdy Bigby - Now that I think of it... :)
ReplyDelete@scottsz: Thanks!
ReplyDeleteWhen all else fails, go for the Scooby Doo ending.
It could be me. I think D&D sucks...but I usually just say it on my own blog. So, nah, it would be silly to have a public identity that dislikes D&D as well as a secret identity that dislikes D&D (if anything I would start a website called 'Your Dungeon ROCKS!' and no one would suspect me.)
ReplyDeleteAlso, since I'm 'Barking Alien' I get to be a meddling kid AND a troublesome dog at the same time! Woohoo! Score one for me.
It would be pretty cool if it was the K&KA collective that was moonlighting as YDIS. It's been a while since we really pissed anyone off.
ReplyDeleteJames: I am late to the party. Some funny comments here though.
ReplyDeleteSpawn of Endra: Hey! No cupcakes for you mister Spawn :-)
John Adams: I thought it was you.
Hell, now I'm wondering who FASERIP is as they've yanked some of my bad poetry in a reply to someone else and snagged my pic for their link on the name.
